Thanalakshmi Subramaniam, aka S.T. Shimi

For decades, she was known to everyone who met her and loved her as “Shimi”– a word that captures both the iridescence of her personality and the fluid grace of her movement; she was born Thanalakshmi Subramaniam on June 11, 1971 in Singapore. In 1990 she moved to the U.S. to attend and graduate from Dartmouth College. In 1995 Shimi came to San Antonio to intern in theater and married a local artist which led to her building her life and legacy in San Antonio. Shimi wrote, performed, danced, and taught as she created and lived a life of social justice, service, and artistic expression. We lost her on December 2, 2020, when she was hit by a car as she crossed the street to a studio where she taught. We are left with a gaping hole in our hearts, but her light is still with us. It will forever shine brightly in all of us touched by Shimi. As a symbol of her light we dedicate this live oak tree adjacent to the iconic Blue Panther in Yanaguana Garden created by her husband Oscadjacent
